Omit or restore a scene

Cut a scene but keep its number and its text.

When you omit a scene, eDraft replaces it on the page with an OMITTED card that keeps the scene’s number. The scene’s text stays in the file, so you can restore it later exactly as it was.

Note: You can omit scenes only in Final Draft (.fdx) scripts. In other scripts, Omit Scene is dimmed. See If Omit Scene is dimmed.

Omit a scene

Do any of the following:

  • In the Navigator, hold the pointer over the scene, then click the Omit Scene button (scissors).
  • Control-click the scene’s heading on the page, then choose Omit Scene.
  • Click anywhere in the scene, then choose Format > Omit Scene.

Restore a scene

Do any of the following:

  • In the Navigator, hold the pointer over the omitted scene, then click the Restore Scene button.
  • Control-click the OMITTED card, then choose Restore Scene.
  • Click the OMITTED card, then choose Format > Restore Scene.

The scene comes back with its words and its number. To reverse either change right away, choose Edit > Undo (⌘Z).

Work around an omitted scene

  • To read the cut text, hold the pointer over the OMITTED card, then click the arrow at the end of the line. Click it again to hide the text.
  • You can’t type in an omitted scene. To change its text, restore it first.
  • The insertion point skips over an omitted scene. You can still select across one and copy it.
  • A line you add at the OMITTED card goes after the omitted scene, not inside it.

In the Navigator, an omitted scene is dimmed and shows how many pages were cut.
