Show what changed since a draft

Mark a draft, then see an asterisk beside every line you change after it.

When you send a script to someone, mark it as a draft. From then on, eDraft compares the script with that draft and shows an asterisk (*) in the right margin beside every line you change. You don’t turn anything on before you start to rewrite.

Mark a draft

  1. Click Revisions in the toolbar.
  2. If the script already has a draft, click the Add button (+) beside the Changes since menu.
  3. Enter a name for the draft, such as “Studio draft”. eDraft suggests “Draft of” and today’s date.
  4. Press Return, or click the checkmark button. For the first draft of a script, click Mark as New Draft.

Revisions now shows the new draft under Changes since, with “No changes since this draft” below it. As you rewrite, that line counts the changes.

You can also choose File > Mark as New Draft to go straight to the name.

The draft is saved in the script’s file. Marking a draft doesn’t change your script. Until you change the script, the Add button is dimmed: a second draft would be the same as the first.

Show or hide the asterisks

  • Click Revisions in the toolbar, then turn Show Changes on or off.
  • Choose View > Show Changes.

Show Changes applies to every script you open on this Mac.

While Show Changes is on and the script has a draft, the Revisions button in the toolbar is shown in your accent color.

Compare with an earlier draft

eDraft compares with the newest draft. If a script has more than one draft, click Revisions in the toolbar, click the Changes since pop-up menu, then choose a draft. When you mark a new draft, eDraft compares with that one.

What counts as a change

  • A line you rewrite: the asterisk is beside the lines where the words changed.
  • A line you add or move, or change to another element: every line of it has an asterisk.
  • A line you delete has no asterisk, because there’s no line left to mark.
  • Bold, italic, underline, highlights, scene numbers, notes, and the title page aren’t changes.

Send a starred draft or a clean draft

A PDF or a printed script matches the page. To send a draft with asterisks, turn Show Changes on, then export a PDF or print. To send a clean draft, turn Show Changes off first.

Note: Drafts are kept in eDraft scripts (.draft). A Final Draft or Fountain script can’t keep a draft. The grid of pages doesn’t show asterisks.
